He was also a cousin of Xiangwei Jiedushi and Duke of Pingyang Xue Song.Xue Xiong initially served as an official under Xue Song and managed the affairs of Weizhou. In the seventh year of Dali (773), after Xue Song's death, he was specially appointed by imperial edict to serve as the prefect of Weizhou.
In the tenth year of Dali (775), Xue Xiong was driven out by his subordinate general Pei Zhiching. On the first day of the first month, the Tang court divided the region into three parts: appointing Xue Ze as the prefect of Xiangzhou, Xue Xiong as the prefect of Weizhou, and Xue Jian as the prefect of Mingzhou. The Jiedushi of Wei-Bo Tian Chengsi sent Lu Ziqi to attack Mingzhou, while Yang Guangchao captured Weizhou and coerced Prefect Xue Xiong into rebellion, but Xue Xiong refused.
